You've been blessed with fine hair, and sure it's quick to style, blow dry, easy to throw in a low bun. But if you ask anyone with finer hair, they hate that it never holds style. Curl it, and two hours later it's droopy. Holds no volume without noticing the backcomb because there's no where to hide it. In this blog, I'll share a few tips and tricks on how to achieve these looks you're wanting with finer hair!
First off, let's start with the basics. It starts with your shampoo and conditioner. You do NOT want something heavy that will weigh down your hair more then it already is. Volumizing shampoo and conditioners should be your best friend. They are light weight, yet still add a tad bit of moisture. While in the shower, let me remind you, shampoo your roots and condition your ends. Do not add conditioner to your roots, it'll make your hair appear limp and lifeless once dry.
Do you try and use a lot of dust it, or hairspray for volume? Ever think you're not achieving voluminous hair because you just have a ton of product build up to start with? Clarifying shampoos can help! I suggest to my clients to use clarifying shampoos at least once a week, to really clean your scalp and remove all dirt and buildup, either from product or the environment, that can really weight down your hair.
I know you've heard a million times not to blow-dry a ton, but with finer hair, it helps add that volume and oomph right off the bat. Use volumizing products at the root and go to town. Either with a round brush, or the easy way, flip your head upside down, to allow the root to dry in a voluminous state. If you're uncomfortable blow drying your hair all the time, make friends with dry shampoo, it adds some grit to your roots while soaking up that greasy feeling.
It's possible your hair is... "too healthy", yes, this can be a thing when looking for volume within the hair cuticle. You might need to rough it up a bit. Add some colour, lighten some pieces, add some highlights. You need some grit in that hair to work with. Sure, smooth, shiny hair is so beautiful... but trying to get it to hold volume will be tough when it's so silky smooth.
When it comes to haircuts, there's techniques your stylist should know when trying to achieve volume. Make sure to always express to your stylist what problems you're having with your hair, aka... volume, holding style, etc. We always can go over problem solving solutions, or add a quick texture snip here and there to help you out at home!
Okay so now, you're wanting to add some volume when styling. Obviously add some back-combing into the areas we want volume. Add some hairspray... but sometimes hairspray doesn't work, it doesn't hold as well... then what? Well, dust.. powder! It works as a grit towards your hair to help it hold. When it falls flat, really rub your roots and it should spark up, like magic, but literally.
Fine hair comes in all shapes and sizes. You can have a lot of hair, but it still be very fine, you can have minimal hair and still have fine hair, heck, you can have the curliest hair out there, and it still can be fine! Find what works best for you, and like I always say, ask questions, always ask. There is no dumb question when it comes to you enjoying your hair! Til next time loves!
